Summit Public SchoolsDENALI NEWS   •  September 5, 2015

Dear Families,

Our students completed their first full week of the regular schedule this year - give them a high five for bringing their best every day!  It was a big week for Summit Public Schools and Denali in particular with the announcement of our organization’s partnership with Facebook and their engineering support in the PLP.  If you haven’t seen the post yet, please take a look here!  The work of the Denali Team of students, teachers, and families was instrumental in moving this process forward.  Ahead of the announcement, The Verge (a local publication) visited Summit Denali to see what student-centered learning looks like in action.  Take a look at the article here.

We hope you enjoy the long weekend.

Here is some key info:

Family PLP Night - Thursday, 9/10, 6pm.
Also known as “Back to School Night Part 2,” this essential event is for ALL Denali families.  The evening will include information from the Directors, as well as time with mentors and project teachers to learn about the PLP tool.

Our first Denali sports meeting is this Friday, September 11, at 7pm.  This is a required meeting for all families interested in Denali athletics.  If you have any questions, please contact our Athletic Director, Coach J, at

Parent Ed Night, Sep 16 (7th and 8th grade families)
This year 7th and 8th graders will take the Human Growth and Relationship Course (Human Sexuality) as part of their Expeditions.  We will have an info night for parents/guardians (not for students) on Wednesday, September 16th, from 6:30 - 8:00pm.
Parents and Guardians interested in the curriculum can also stop by the front desk beginning 9/9 and ask for the Human Sexuality Binder at the from Ms. Miranda which is available upon request. It will stay at the school in the front office and cannot be emailed or photocopied due to copyright purposes of the training received compliant with CA Ed -code for the instructors who will offer this course to your students!

Please RSVP here by 9/9 if you are attending

Google Group
If you haven't already, please subscribe to the Summit Denali Parent discussion group (!forum/summitdenaliparentorg).  This Google group exists for parents of Summit Denali students to share information and build community (carpool requests, volunteer scheduling, etc).  In addition, a weekly newsletter is sent out to this group containing important news and reminders about school events.

Afterschool Activities
We are excited about the after school activities that will be kicking off soon at Denali.  To start of the year, there are several activities available.   Please click here for more details.  All activities offer scholarships so that all students are able to participate.
On Tuesday during the school day students will hear about all the after school activities available and be asked to complete a survey about what activities they are interested in by Thursday.  Please work with your child (children) to complete this survey and ensure his/her choices match your family's schedule etc.  If you have already registered for an activity, there will be a space to note that on the survey as well.

Parent volunteers
We want to send a HUGE thanks to our parent volunteers this week, especially those families who have helped out with traffic flow and safe student crossing during pick-up and drop-off.  We definitely need more parent volunteers from 8:00 - 8:15 in the morning and 3:00 - 3:30 in the afternoon.  Please stop by and support!  (Juliet and Joe as well as parent volunteers can provide guidance - and an awesome bright yellow vest - for anyone who is interested in helping!)

Facilities Day
We will regularly have facilities days on the first Saturday of the month.  Since this month’s first Saturday is also a holiday week and we don’t have any urgent needs, we will not be holding a facilities day this month.  Mark your calendars for our next facilities day on Saturday October 3rd.
