DENALI NEWS   •  November 7, 2015

Dear Families,

This Friday is our Community Celebration Event!  There will be a potluck beginning at 6:00 pm, with entertainment at 7:00 pm, brought to you by the Denali Parent Organization.  We’re leaving the potluck wide open - bring a food item that you enjoy, and we’re sure others will enjoy sharing.  The Scholastic Book Fair will be open for business, and all sales help support Denali.  The Book Fair runs from Nov 9 - 13.  Also beginning on Monday is our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive through Second Harvest Food Bank.  This food drive continues through Nov 18.  Please bring in non-perishable food items to place in our donation bins.  We look forward to seeing you there!

At last Friday’s Coffee with the Directors we reviewed a short Ted Talk video featuring Tony Wagner, a professor and author who has written extensively about school redesign.  We think you’ll enjoy this brief video.  If you were in Denali’s “Zone C” last week you would have seen some cool new furniture prototypes.  We’re working with architectural firm Gensler on an iterative design process for student furniture and space use.  They’re taking feedback from kids and faculty on a weekly basis to try out new designs and space configurations.  Take a look next time you come by.

Think back to when you first applied to Denali and how helpful it was to speak with current families. Now it's your turn to help out! We have several recruiting events and Open Houses this fall and winter break. We made a sign-up sheet for parent volunteers. Please take a look and sign up to help with an event if you can!

Remember that there’s no school on Wednesday in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Onward,
-J & J

Important Notice for Current & Alumni Summit Families

The California Department of Education (CDE) is currently engaged in litigation with two non-profits, Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and Concerned Parent Association. (Case No. 2:11-cv-3471-KJM-AC).

As part of the litigation process, the plaintiffs requested numerous documents and student records from the CDE, and the court has ordered the CDE to comply. Many of these documents include personally identifiable information of students who have attended a California school at any time since January 1, 2008. The attorneys and plaintiffs reviewing the records are required to keep the data private and confidential, and will have to return or destroy it afterward. Fewer than 10 people will receive the data, and the review will be overseen by a court-appointed special master.

Parents and guardians may request an exemption by April 1 from the court order to release their students' information, which may include addresses, test scores, disciplinary records, health and mental health records. You can find the objection form here in English and Spanish. If you would like more information, please contact the CDE at (916) 319-0800 or http://www.cde.ca.gov/morganhillcase.

Summit Public Schools is not a party to the litigation and is not required to disclose any student information, nor does it intend to do so.

Dear Families,

Expeditions is here!  We’re excited to welcome back Ms. Kelly Shannon and the Expeditions faculty for the next two weeks as they facilitate rich experiences in the arts, tech, and health and wellness.  During the next two weeks the Denali faculty will be hard at work collaborating, planning, and engaging in professional development.  Every morning during Expeditions begins with PLT.  During Expeditions the line on the PLP does not move, which presents a great opportunity for students to catch up or get ahead on their focus areas.  If you have questions about your child’s work during Expeditions, please ask them, and ask their mentor.
Please note that Office hours will continue as normal during Expeditions.

Important: Change of Schedule
On Thursday, December 17, please make arrangements to pick up your child by 3:45pm.  Denali faculty have an offsite meeting.  Thank you for your flexibility.

DENALI NEWS   •  November 15, 2015

Dear Families,

Thanks to those who helped make our Community Potluck on Friday evening a great success!  It was a warm gathering of families that also included a student raffle for prizes from the Book Fair and the grand prize - the opportunity to pie Ms. Mohnkern and Mr. Bielecki!

This upcoming week before the Thanksgiving break, as well as the week after the break, will be very busy for students and teachers.  Continue encouraging your child to reflect on their successes and their struggles, and advise them on seeking help from their mentor or project teacher if needed.

Office Hours:
Office Hours on Monday and Wednesday afternoons will look a bit different between now and January.  Teachers will be facilitating workshops based on specific focus areas in math and English.  These workshops are designed for students who have attempted, but not passed certain focus areas.  The family’s role in this process is to look at the Calendar of Playlist Support that teachers will update every week and make plans for your child to stay for the workshop if he or she needs the support.  Students who do not need support in these specific focus areas will have PLT and content assessments with other teachers.

For pick-up, DO NOT use any neighboring parking lots, and do not park in the street.  Remember, you have a long window of being able to pick up, even on Fridays (until 4pm).  Please communicate with your child or carpool about expected times of pickup.

Online Payment System:
Between now and Sunday, November 22, families can sign up for Summit’s online payment system.  If you didn’t sign up at the beginning of the year, this is your chance.  This will be the last round of sign-ups for the 15-16 school year.  Here is the link to the Google Form: Parent Account Signup Form

Onward,

We had an AWESOME Spirit Week last week, with great student and faculty participation for our theme days!  The next several weeks also feature more activities and celebrations, including our Dia de Los Muertos celebration on Monday, our Thanksgiving Food Drive (Nov 9 - 18), the Scholastic Book Fair, our Community Celebration and Potluck on the evening of Friday, Nov 13, and Community Group potlucks happening throughout the month.  See below for more information.

A note about After School time:
Office Hours on Monday and Wednesday are for subject-specific support on projects and playlists with teachers helping out.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are quiet, individual student work time.  All students who are not picked up by 3:30 are expected to be working quietly by 3:35.  If you pick up your children after 3:35, you should come inside and get them, or send a text message to them when you pull up.

Sports:
There will be a meeting for parents of girls who will be playing Denali Girls' Basketball this season, on Weds. November 18th from 6:30-7:30pm at Denali. Dia de Los Muertos:
Students have been learning about Dia de Los Muertos in their Community groups, and will get a chance to experience some elements of the celebration this Monday.  Thanks to the parents and faculty who have taken a lead on this cultural experience.

Community Celebration - Potluck 6-8pm - Entertainment at 7pm, Fri, Nov 13.
This is a fun event sponsored by our Parent Organization.  Please bring a food item - there will also be a door prize. The Scholastic Book Fair will be open for business, and all sales help support Denali.  The Book Fair runs from Nov 9 - 13.

Our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive begins on Nov 9 and continues through Nov 18.  Please bring in non-perishable food items to place in our donation bins.

The next Coffee with the Directors will be this Fri, Nov 6, from 8 - 9am. We recommend taking a look at this article before the event. As always, we'll send out notes in the following weekend's newsletter.

This Saturday, Nov 7, we’ll have another Facilities Work Day.  We’ll focus on cleaning inside and out!

Finally, please do not park in any neighboring parking lots unless you have heard from the school that it’s OK to do so!  Thank you for helping us be good neighbors!

Happy November!

DENALI NEWS   •  October 24, 2015

Dear Families,

Thanks for spreading the word about our recruiting open house last week!  We had a great turnout of families who showed up eager to learn more about Denali as a middle and high school option for their children!  It was fun!  Our next Open House is on Thursday, November 19.  Here’s the flyer to print out, forward, and share.

Next week is Spirit Week!  This annual tradition brings together fun school spirit activities and mentor group competitions, along with student council speeches and elections.  Monday starts us off with Pajama Day, followed by Backwards Day, Sports Day, Black and Orange Day, and Costume Day (no fake weapons or masks).  Here’s the Spirit Week flyer.

Last week students and parent volunteers from our 3D Printing Club showcased their work at a 3D Printing Expo at Lockheed Martin.  Here’s a radio story featuring one of our 8th graders.  Let’s give a huge shout-out for Denali kids representing our school well in such an innovative way!

With cold and flu season knocking on our door, it’s important to reinforce good hand washing habits with your children at home, along with “elbow sneezing” instead of sneezing into bare hands.  We encourage the same practices at Denali, and we’ve also updated our Wishlist with more disinfecting wipes for tables.  Thanks in advance for the help

Finally, and very important: Do NOT park in the parking lots of our neighbors! For special events we will let you know which of our neighboring parking lots you can use.

Here’s to a great week!

Onward,
-J & J

Sports update:
We’re excited to launch our athletics website.  All families currently participating or interested in Denali athletics should bookmark this site.  Coach J will update this regularly with schedules and other information.

We're still looking for more girls to join our Girls Volleyball team.  Please see Ms. Miranda to pick up a sports application.  Practices happen before school, Mon/Wed/Fri.

Until we are part of a league (a process that takes quite a bit of time) we need your help.  If you have any connections at local middle schools - coaches or athletic directors that we could talk to about scheduling games, please email Coach J:  coachjbumagat@gmail.com.

Family Survey
If you haven’t yet, please take our brief Family Survey.  Your feedback is extremely important, and this survey, administered every fall and spring, helps gather that feedback and input.

Annual Campaign
Our goal is for 100% of Denali families to participate in our annual donation campaign.  A paper mailing is being sent to all families this week.  You can also donate online by visiting the Denali website and see the information on the homepage under news and announcements.  Additional information is available in our Annual Campaign FAQ document.

Office Support Volunteer Opportunity
We’re looking for parents who are available to come in for a few hours to provide office support, and any help would be greatly appreciated! No previous experience or training is necessary. Feel free to bring in your own work to do while covering the front.  If you can help, please sign-up here.

DENALI NEWS   •  October 3, 2015

Dear Families,

We just completed our first full week of Expeditions!  In the last several days students have begun making books, welding plastic, writing code, practicing yoga, learning important health and wellness content, and so much more.  We’re looking forward to another week where students explore new activities on their way to finding an extracurricular passion.

Denali teachers have also been busy!  We call it ExPD - Expeditions Professional Development - and these two weeks give us a time to step back, dig into the data, and collaboratively plan with our team and with our colleagues from Summit Public School.  Our focus areas for this ExPD include project planning, improving Summit Solves, improving Office Hours, and modifying our space configuration for PLT.  We use many similar structures as our students, including 1:1 coaching check-ins, PLT for teachers, and Socratic Seminars as a whole faculty.  We’re very grateful to Ms. Kelly and the Expeditions team for their work with our students that allows us to be even better in the weeks ahead.

Finally, a BIG thanks to the families who came out for our Facilities Work Day this morning!  Our next work day will be in about a month.

Onward,
-J & J

School Communication - Robocalls

In an effort to better communicate with families, and in response to family feedback, we’ve simplified our robocalling protocol.  We will only use robocalls during the day in case of emergency.  We will regularly use robocalls during the evening hours for reminders and key messages.  Thanks to the families for sharing their feedback.

Parent Ed Night - High School (Oct 14, 6:30 pm)

Ahead of our Parent Ed Night on high school on Wednesday, October 14th, we’re encouraging families to read a few sections of an important text - like a book club!  Our focus text is Creating Innovators by Tony Wagner.  Please read the introduction, and chapters 1, 2, and 5.

Athletics
Our athletics program is picking up speed.  Here are some updates:

  1. We will be having a Girls Volleyball team!  For families who turned in their paperwork for girls volleyball, please watch for an email from Coach J about the practice schedule.

  2. We still need coaches for: Boys soccer (starts Dec 7), Girls soccer (starts Feb 9), and Track/field (starts April).  Coaches are paid a stipend.  If you or anyone you know would be willing to coach, please contact Coach J (coachjbumagat@gmail.com).

  3. If you have any questions about Denali athletics, please email Coach J.

We’re looking for parents who are available to come in for a few hours to provide office support over the next two weeks.  Jessica needs some time away from the front desk for an important project so any help would be greatly appreciated! No previous experience or training is necessary. Feel free to bring in your own work to do while covering the front.  If you can help, please sign-up here.

Dear Families,

Our students completed their first full week of the regular schedule this year - give them a high five for bringing their best every day!  It was a big week for Summit Public Schools and Denali in particular with the announcement of our organization’s partnership with Facebook and their engineering support in the PLP.  If you haven’t seen the post yet, please take a look here!  The work of the Denali Team of students, teachers, and families was instrumental in moving this process forward.  Ahead of the announcement, The Verge (a local publication) visited Summit Denali to see what student-centered learning looks like in action.  Take a look at the article here.

We hope you enjoy the long weekend.
Onward,

Afterschool Activities
We are excited about the after school activities that will be kicking off soon at Denali.  To start of the year, there are several activities available.   Please click here for more details.  All activities offer scholarships so that all students are able to participate.
On Tuesday during the school day students will hear about all the after school activities available and be asked to complete a survey about what activities they are interested in by Thursday.  Please work with your child (children) to complete this survey and ensure his/her choices match your family's schedule etc.  If you have already registered for an activity, there will be a space to note that on the survey as well.

Parent volunteers
We want to send a HUGE thanks to our parent volunteers this week, especially those families who have helped out with traffic flow and safe student crossing during pick-up and drop-off.  We definitely need more parent volunteers from 8:00 - 8:15 in the morning and 3:00 - 3:30 in the afternoon.  Please stop by and support!  (Juliet and Joe as well as parent volunteers can provide guidance - and an awesome bright yellow vest - for anyone who is interested in helping!)

Facilities Day
We will regularly have facilities days on the first Saturday of the month.  Since this month’s first Saturday is also a holiday week and we don’t have any urgent needs, we will not be holding a facilities day this month.  Mark your calendars for our next facilities day on Saturday October 3rd.

DENALI NEWS   •  August 29, 2015

Dear Families,

It’s been a wonderful first two weeks at Denali!  Thank you all for your support kicking off the school year.  Whether you volunteered at the camping trip, helped with a facilities day, brought in coffee or joined us for Back to School Night, we appreciate your partnership in starting the school year strong!  Students have begun their project classes and their first projects are well-underway.  Students have also begun working on PLT - personalized learning time - setting goals, making plans, learning content, and showing what they know on assessments.  On Monday and Tuesday students will have their first official Mentor check-in.  These weekly 10-min one-on-one check-ins with their mentors allow students to reflect and mentors to coach students on their habits of success.  Ask your child how their first check-in went on Monday or Tuesday!

Below are a few important updates for the upcoming weeks.  As always please feel free to reach out to us with any questions!

Coffee with the Directors

Our first Coffee with the Directors will be this Friday, Sep 4, from 8-9am at Denali.  These coffees are opportunities for families to get face-to-face updates and to ask the questions important to them or other families they might be representing.  At this Friday’s event we will share results from last spring’s parent survey, as well as more deeply explain our priorities for the year.  For those who can’t make it, please email your questions to Juliet or Joe by Thursday. We will share highlights from the Friday event in our email next week.

Expeditions

As we embark on the 2015-2016 School year at Denali it is with great excitement that we share some timely Expedition updates with you!  We begin this year with Kelly Shannon as the Executive Director, a role that she is embracing and 100% of our full time teaching team continuing at Denali from last year plus two additional faculty members: Audry Welch and Zev Vernon-Lapow joining!

In true Expedition traveling fashion, OUR Expedition team attended all Back to School Nights enjoyed engaging with Denali families! As mentioned, please view all of the Expedition Course offerings, faculty biographies and photos in the Denali Expeditions Course Catalog.  We have two asks of families:

  1. Please review the Denali Expeditions Course Catalog your children and help prepare them to choose from the below options by 9/1 when Denali grizzlies will complete the Expedition survey at school.

ONE of the below 6th, 7th & 8th Grade 4 week Courses:

AND choose ONE of the 6th, 7th & 8th Grade 8 week Courses:

  1. If you are interested, please attend our Parent Education Night on 9/16 from 6:30-8pm which will focus on the Health Connect Curriculum for our Human Growth and Relationship Education course.

For more information about Expeditions, click here.

Pick-up and Drop-off

Thanks for your patience as we have tried several iterations in our traffic flow pattern, and thank you for following the norms and directions of our faculty and parent volunteers.  Please click here to view the updated traffic flow map.  To speed things along, we encourage families to keep a paper in their car with the name of the child(ren) in large print and make this visible when rolling through the A-L or M-Z lanes.  Remember, M-Z is on the inside, and does drop-off/pick-up at the front of the building.  A-L last names use the outside lane and drop-off/pick-up on the north side of the building.

Afterschool

We’re excited to kick off several great extracurricular activities this year.  We’ll officially start some fun new clubs and activities on September 14, with more info and sign-up info coming soon.  A huge thanks to Cathy Giblin and our Denali Parent Org for putting a big effort into after school activities. If you are interested in leading an afterschool club or activity, please complete this form by Friday 9/4.
Aside from clubs and activities, remember the following:

-Monday and Wednesday are teacher Office Hours.  Teachers are available to work with kids on workshops, and students can take content assessments.

-Tuesday and Thursday afternoons all teachers have meetings.  Students who stay are expected to work quietly or read.  There are no content assessments.

Parent PLP Night - September 10

Remember to mark your calendars for the parent PLP night, Thursday, September 10, from 6-7:30pm.  Mentors will be leading workshops about the PLP, and families will learn about the Family PLP meetings that you’ll be having with your child and your child’s mentor in September.

Onward,

-Juliet and Joe
